Vietnam National Assembly rejects food safety committee proposal
22 January 2010
The Vietnam National Assembly has rejected Minister of Health Nguyen Quoc Trieu's proposal for a National Committee for Food Safety. Trieu argued that the committee would help ensure food safety in produce from Vietnam's 9.4 million farm households as well as food sold at markets along Vietnam's borders, where food is imported daily.
Although the Standing Committee rejected the minister's proposal, it agreed to draft a bill on food safety for approval at the National Assembly session in May. The bill will give joint responsibility for controlling food hygiene and safety to the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
