India assigns ministry to implement Food Safety and Standard Act

India’s government has assigned the responsibility of administration and implementation of the provisions of the Food Safety and Standard Act 2006 to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The Act, which envisages the establishment of a Food Safety and Standards Authority to lay down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, was originally conceptualised, formulated and piloted in Parliament by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
