Commission addresses industry concerns at Vitafoods discussion forum

11 May 2009

Basil Mathioudakis, head of the European Commission’s food law, nutrition and labelling unit joined panellists at last week's EAS Discussion Forum at Vitafoods International to address the sector's regulatory concerns.

Mr Mathioudakis joined Peter van Doorn, Chairman of European food supplements trade organisation EHPM; and and Eduardo Escobedo from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) alongside EAS Director Simon Pettman to discuss and address how the future regulatory framework will shape the market for fortified foods and supplements.

Key issues included nutrition and health claims, maximum levels of vitamins and minerals in food and food supplements, and the revision of the novel food Regulation.

The forum drew together more than 100 manufacturers and distributors, who were given the opportun ity to voice their concerns to the panel and get clarification on regulatory requirements for key issues in the sector.

Mr Pettman said: “The coming year promises to be of enormous significance for the food, supplement and ingredients sector, and the Vitafoods Discussion Forum is a once a year chance to address the big challenges that are being faced by the sector.”
